General SEO tips.
Q. I think I have done my keyword research and optimised my site quite
well, but still am not getting anywhere. Can I have some tips on things
to think about that aren't covered in basic advice sites?
A. Many of these points are often overlooked:
1. Have plenty of relevant text content on the page.
2. Change link buttons or javascript links to text links if possible. Otherwise,
add text links at the bottom or side of the page.
3. Shorten the title of each page to 55 characters or less if possible.
Try not to target more than 2 or 3 phrases at most on one page.
4. Get rid of the javascript in the code and put it in an external file.
5. Use css (cascading style sheets) instead of color, size and font tags
in the code.
6. Have your own webspace, preferably with a unique IP address - do not
use a shared, free hosting site.
7. Make sure you have a site map if your site is large.
8. Have 404 page redirecting from any deleted pages.
9. Make sure your page code is less than 100k. The smaller the better.
10. Submit your site to ODP / Google and Yahoo Directories, paying attention
to the most appropriate category, particularly by location.
11. Have your own domain name, not a subfolder of another site.
12. Find complimentary websites and request a link exchange.
13. Read each search engine's guidelines and follow them very strictly.
14. Don't spam by keyword stuffing, adding doorway pages or cloaking.
15. If things don't happen within a few days, dont panic! It can take weeks
and even months for some search engines to update their listings.
