An A to Z of search engine optimisation terms and a glossary of terminology that is often used when explaining how search engines work. Many of the words and phrases below will be generic and relate to all, while others may be specific to Ask Jeeves, MSN, Yahoo and partcularly, Google. There will also be reference to the directories, which are often confused with search engines. A

Above the fold - the part of the web page that one can see on the screen without scrolling down.

Affiliate program - selling your products via an advert on another person's website. A link is placed on your partner's site and you can either pay a fee for every time a visitor comes to your site or if purchases are made online, your partner can track the sale and be paid a commission or fixed amount.

B

Backlink - a link on another web page that links to the page in question. The back link could be on a page within the same site or on another website.

Search engines - allow internet surfers to find information on a given subject the web, using a keyword or phrase. The search engine, such as Google or Ask Jeeves, maintains a database of websites that it scans using programs known as "robots" or "spiders". It then returns results based on what it deems to be an order of relevance.
